Student Computer Hardware and Software Standards

This introduction will provide you with background information you need in regard to computer skills, hardware & accessories, configuration requirements, and a resource contact list.

Computer Skills

In order to function comfortably in an on-line course, it is essential that you have the ability to perform basic computer, software, editing, Internet, and browsing skills, such as:

» Locating, opening and closing files, using a mouse
» Using a word processor
» Sending/receiving and opening e-mail and attachments
» Cutting, copying, and pasting text from one document to another
» Toggling between two applications
» Uploading and downloading files
» Feeling comfortable finding and using the Netscape and Internet Explorer browsers on your computer
» Configuring your browser to send e-mail
» Knowing how to add bookmarks and/or favorites
» Locating web sites when using a WWW address (URL)
» Feeling comfortable searching the Internet for specific topics
» Updating and maintaining anti-virus protection for your operating system (eg: McAfee or Norton)

You are encouraged to "buddy" with someone with whom you can improve your skills. Use on-line tutorials (see attached) on your own computer, or seek assistance from the Moody or other local library resources or computer courses (see attached).
