SCHOOL OF NURSING VISION & MISSION

Pamela G. WatsonMessage from the Dean
Pamela G. Watson, RN, ScD

Welcome to the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) School of Nursing (SON) website. Prospective students will find information providing a snapshot of degree offerings in the School of Nursing at the bachelor, master's and doctoral degree levels. This is a unique time for our prospective students who may notice that our prerequisite requirements have changed. We encourage you to contact us to address any concern you might have about fulfilling the prerequisite requirements. Also, on this site, prospective faculty are provided the current teaching opportunities in the School. Information is also included on our site for alumni activities and opportunities available for involvement to those in our community who wish to contribute in some way to enhance the programs of our School.

As Dean of the UTMB SON, I am committed to lead this historic school (the first Nursing School in Texas) to excel in all aspects of the academic enterprise – education, practice and research. We continue to offer the most innovative approaches to nursing education in all of our programs, including clinical simulation with interactive mannequins, online education programs, development of new degree programs, and fast-track degree plan options. We are actively engaged, through nursing faculty practice and community service activities, to be enthusiastic practitioners who are "Here for the Health of Texas". Additionally, through nursing research, the SON faculty are involved in the acquisition of new knowledge which will translate to improvements at the bedside for better patient care.

The profession of nursing and educators of nursing professionals are faced with challenges like no other time in our history. There are, now, four generations of adults living, working and learning within our society which predisposes us to unprecedented change. To meet the challenges associated with these changes, the SON administration and faculty are dedicated to design the most innovative and effective teaching strategies to enhance critical thinking and advance evidence-based practice in our students, nursing practitioners and educators.

The UTMB SON is an integral part of UTMB, a prestigious academic health center including six Magnet-status hospitals which provide excellent patient care to a culturally diverse population and clinical opportunities for our students and nursing practitioners. In the research arena, UTMB is rapidly becoming internationally-recognized for bioterrorism research and is well recognized for a broad base of basic science and clinical research.

I feel very fortunate to direct this School of Nursing with its cadre of extraordinarily talented faculty and staff. Hopefully, you will consider joining us at UTMB on beautiful Galveston Island.
