The Rebecca Sealy Distinguished Nurse Alumnus Award was established to honor outstanding alumni of the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing. Rebecca Sealy was the wife of John Sealy, the benefactor of the original John Sealy Hospital.
Mrs. Sealy was instrumental in raising the needed funds to establish and support the John Sealy Training School for Nurses. The School was the first school for nurses in the State and among the first in the country. Mrs. Sealy maintained her support for nursing and the School through her leadership in the School's Board of Lady Managers, which assumed the responsibility for supporting it. The Rebecca Sealy Distinguished Nurse Alumnus Award is given on an annual basis to a distinguished alumnus from the School of Nursing for excellence in one or more of the following areas: research, published articles, clinical practice, education, administration, organizational work involving health care, or innovation in health care delivery systems.
Esperanza Villanueva Joyce, Ed.D., CNS., R.N., Class of 1975
Dr. Esperanza Villanueva Joyce received her BSN from University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1975, her MSN from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio in 1976, and her Ed.D. from Nova Southeastern University in 1985.
Dr. Joyce has spent most of her nursing career as a State of Texas employee. Her first teaching appointment was at the University of Texas Medical Branch. She then served as Nursing Director for UTMB Emergency Department and Outpatient Clinics, returned to teach at the SON for a few years and then returned to the clinical setting as a case manager in Pediatrics. She then moved to San Antonio and worked for 3 years at UTHSC-SA where she received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Joyce's was appointed Captain in the United States Army in 1990. She served as Faculty Development Chair and Chief of Research at Fort Sam Houston 5501st Army Unit. During her eight year tenure she earned numerous achievement medals and was promoted to Major.
Dr. Joyce joined the Texas A&M -Corpus Christi Faculty in 1996. While at A&M Dr. Joyce became a tenured professor, was Outreach Coordinator, Assistant Director of the School of Nursing and Director of Continuing Education. In 2002, Dr. Joyce was appointed Nursing Dean and Professor at Our Lady of the Lake College, Baton Rouge, LA. She was responsible for the development, administration, management, and evaluation of the ADN, RN-BSN, LPN-RN Articulation as well as two accelerated programs via Tulane University in New Orleans.
Currently Dr. Joyce is Assistant Vice President of Nursing Education and Director of the School of Nursing at Ohio University where she directs all levels of program planning, implementation, and evaluation (including professional accreditation) in the School of Nursing. Dr. Joyce approves and monitors program delivery at regional campuses in Zanesville and Chillicothe and the RN-BSN and MSN programs at the Athens campus. She provides leadership for faculty development in the areas of teaching, scholarly work, and professional activities as well as student recruitment and advisement.
Dr. Joyce's extensive research and published articles have made a significant impact on health care. Notable are her studies on Obesity in Children funded by the Coastal Bend Education Center, "Emergency Department Visits and Hospital Admissions Linked to Effects of Ozone on Asthma in Children and Adults" and "Optimizing Wellness Through Screening and Education". Dr. Joyce's textbook, Say It In Spanish: A Guide for Health Professionals, now in its third edition, is a W. B. Saunders book that many faculty have enthusiastically hailed as a valuable resource for students and a guide for health care professionals.
