Chloe Floyd, R.N., M.S.N.
Associate Professor Emeritus
The University of Texas
Medical Branch School of Nursing
Chloe Floyd received her A. A. degree from Tarleton State College, a diploma in Nursing from the John Sealy College of Nursing, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with certification in teaching supervision and public health from the University of Colorado and a Master of Science in Nursing from Vanderbilt University.
Serving both as a practitioner and educator, Chloe has been with the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing at Galveston for more than 30 years. During that time she was responsible for many accomplishments, and served in many capacities. She has seen many changes and great progress in the School of Nursing during her tenure. She was a staff nurse in the John Sealy Hospital from 1943-45 and, after holding several positions in Tennessee and Colorado, returned to UTMB as an Instructor, Assistant Professor, and Associate Professor and Department Chairman of Medical-Surgical Nursing. She was instrumental in the development of the Master’s Program in Nursing on this campus in the 1950’s and 60’s, and in 1967, served as Interim Dean. One of her major contributions to nursing at UTMB was her development of nursing continuing education programs. In 1971 she started the Continuing Education Program for the School of Nursing and was the Director until her retirement in 1985. In addition, Chloe wrote a grant and served as project director for the original Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program for 8 years in the 1970’s.
She was a member of the National League for Nursing and participated in their accreditation activities for many years. This also included accreditation work with the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges. Additionally, during her career she was active in the American Nurses’ Association at local and state levels. Her professional activities included volunteer work in a variety of organizations such as the American Heart Association, American Lung Association, American Cancer Society and American Red Cross. Throughout her career Chloe served as a reviewer for The Journal of Nursing Research, published numerous papers and presented many programs as well as acting in a consultant role.
Chloe Floyd describes her career as varied and enlightening, encompassing a variety of work experiences in nursing. She feels that the primary value of all her experiences has been educational, to herself as well as to others. She also enjoyed many professional collaborations during the years from 1943, when she started working as a staff nurse at John Sealy Hospital, until 1985, when she retired as Associate Professor and Director of Continuing Education and Special Projects. Recently Chloe received recognition as co-founder of the Alpha Delta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, an international honor society for nursing. In 1986, she received the Distinguished Alumnus Association from the UTMB School of Nursing and in 1991 was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the UTMB School of Nursing Alumni Association.
The Chloe Floyd Lecture Series is part of the School of Nursing Alumni Association Homecoming, an annual event for all University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing alumni at Galveston.
