Elizabeth Reifsnider, PhD, APRN, BC
Professor and Associate Dean for Research
Dr. Elizabeth Reifsnider was recently named Associate Dean for Research and appointed to the Constance Brewer Koomey Professorship in Nursing at the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing in Galveston . She was an Associate Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Nursing, where her research focused on maternal and child nutrition and growth, breastfeeding, the WIC Program, and diabetes. She has a strong interest in research with vulnerable and underserved populations.
Dr. Reifsnider received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Avila College in Kansas City , Missouri and began her career in public health nursing in Oklahoma . She obtained a certificate as an ob/gyn nurse practitioner and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Oklahoma . While practicing public health nursing, she served the Oklahoma State Health Department as a public health nurse, a nurse practitioner, a nurse consultant and a district nursing supervisor. The counties under her supervision were Pottawatomie, Seminole, Pontotoc, and Hughes. She then obtained her PhD in nursing from The University of Texas at Austin in family and community health nursing.
Dr. Reifsnider's research examines maternal child issues—especially growth and nutrition, including breastfeeding—among low-income, vulnerable populations. All of her funded studies have been conducted with the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). She has obtained federal funding on nutritional and parenting outcomes of WIC mothers and children and for the education of nursing students in public health nursing.
Ajaz A. Shah, MSF, MBA
Systems Analyst
Ajaz Shah provides support for quantitative data management and analysis in the Center for Nursing Research & Scholarship. In addition, he manages the CNRS Instrument Bank [link here] and support for developing Web and scan able data entry forms.
Mr. Shah holds a BS in Biology from the University of Kashmir (India), and a Masters in Tree Genetics from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. Previously he worked as a Research Assistant in the Social Sciences Division of Preventive Medicine & Community Health here at UTMB. Mr. Shah also previously worked as a Senior Research Officer and Conservation Specialist for the State Natural Resources Department in India. He is a registered consultant with Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome, and has consulted on Monitoring and Evaluation of International Forestry Projects for the organization. Mr. Shah recently completed his MBA in health care administration at the University of Houston – Clear Lake.
John M. Bernstein, MA

John Bernstein returned to UTMB after spending two years in the commercial world writing software documentation for companies such as State Farm and American National Insurance. Previously (1991 - 98) he worked as the technical writer for the Health Information System Simulation (HISS) Project in the UTMB School of Allied Health Sciences.
Mr. Bernstein earned a BA in Humanities (1986) and an MA in Literature (1993) from the University of Houston—Clear Lake. Besides his academic work with the HISS Project, he has published two short stories from his Master's degree thesis.
Mr. Bernstein lives in Galveston with his wife, Anita Robbins, and two dogs, Lucy and Lacy. He plays guitar (an Epiphone Les Paul), reads mostly biographies and historical fiction, surfs the net, and walks on the beach trying to keep up with the spouse and dogs.
Reneé
Galloway
CNRS Coordinator
Reneé Galloway came to work at UTMB in 1989 and joined the CNRS team in 1998. Ms. Galloway coordinates much of the daily operation of CNRS, and oversees the office-related purchases and expenditures. She works with faculty to develop poster and slide presentations, and she also responsible for the graphic design and layout of the CNRS' newsletter, headline hCNRS. In Ms. Galloways spare time she loves to read romance novels, shop, and share invaluable moments with the four most important cornerstones in her life - her husband and her children.
