Master's Program Admission Requirements
The requirements for admission to the master's degree program in nursing are itemized below:

A bachelor's of science in nursing degree from a nursing program accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Comission (NLNAC), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or other nationally recognized nursing education accrediting body. Applicants who have a baccalaureate degree in nursing from a non-accredited program will be considered individually.

Successful completion of a basic statistics course within five years prior to enrollment.
- Submission of an application for admission and application fee. Students must submit the application via the Web on the Office of Enrollment Services web site.
- Submission of all transcripts from each academic institution attended to the Office of Enrollment Servies.

Current (active), valid, unencumbered license or multi-state privilege to practice as a registered nurse in the state(s) in which the student participates in any clinical learning experiences.

A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all college work and a 3.0 for all upper division courses.

Recent experience as a registered nurse is determined by the focus area.

A personal interview with faculty is required.

A minimum score of 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for applicants whose native language is not English.

As of May 8, 2006, The University of Texas Medical Branch, School of Nursing no longer requires the Graduate Record Examination or Miller Analogies Test (GRE/MAT) as a pre-requisite to enter the Master's Program.

Experience Requirements by Program/Track

FNP - A minimum of one year of recent experience as a registered nurse is preferred.

GNP - A minimum of one year of recent experience as a registered nurse is preferred.

ACNP - A minimum of two years of recent experience as a registered nurse in an acute care facility is required.
- PNP - A minimum of one year of recent pediatric experience as a registered nurse is required.

NNP - A minimum of two years of recent experience as a registered nurse in a Level III nursery is required.

Nurse Educator - A minimum of one year of recent experience as a registered nurse is required; acute care experience preferred.

Nursing Leadership - A minimum of one year of recent management/leadership experience as a registered nurse is required.
Post Master's Program Admission Requirements
In addition to submitting a completed application and application fee, the requirements for admission to the post-master's degree program in nursing are listed below:

A minimum of a master's degree in nursing from a nursing program accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), or other nationally recognized nursing education accrediting body. Applicants who have a master's degree in nursing from a non-accredited program will be considered individually. The applicant should submit additional data about the program and its accreditation status.

Current, valid license or multi-state privilege to practice as a registered nurse in the state(s) in which the student participates in any clinical learning experiences.

Selection Factors
The Master's Nursing Admissions Committee considers a number of elements in the selection of students. No single item will be used in the consideration of an applicant. The minimum admission requirements have been listed previously. Additional elements that may be considered and assessed in a personal interview include:

Enrollment in Graduate Courses Without Admission to the Graduate Program
Individuals meeting graduate program requirements and holding a baccalaureate degree in nursing may be admitted on a space-available basis as special (non degree) students. Special (non degree) students may earn a maximum of 6 semester hours.
Policy for Criminal Background Checks
Applicants accepted to the School of Nursing are required to undergo and pass a criminal background check prior to matriculation. For more information please visit http://www.son.utmb.edu/student_services/ss_security.asp.
Evidence of immunizations
Evidence of immunizations required by UTMB must be submitted to Student Wellness for verification and processing, including documentation for COMPLETED three dose series of Hepatitis B vaccines and a positive Hepatitis B antibody titer. All immunization requirements must be met to proceed in a clinical course. Students who are not in compliance with the above policy will not be permitted to participate in clinical activities. |
