The MSN in Nursing Leadership in Healthcare Organizations program is designed to prepare innovative nurse leaders for the 21 st century.

Changes in demand, financing, and delivery models are providing opportunity and necessity for nurse leaders to take unprecedented leadership in shaping the healthcare system at local, regional, national, and international levels. Graduates of this program will take pivotal clinical and/or administrative leadership positions. They will collaborate in creating models of integrated health care systems which improve health care outcomes to individuals and populations. By integrating leadership expertise with clinical perspective and sound business practices, these graduates will help transform and influence the direction of healthcare and nursing.

This graduate program is based on research delineating key competencies of successful, transformational health care leaders. It focuses on the development of self as an ethical leader, leading in complex healthcare organizations, and engaging nurses and other healthcare professionals and communities in inventive, interdisciplinary health care planning and delivery. Emphasizing the strategic use of human and financial resources, the coursework includes the use of evidence-based management approaches; the organization, development, and management of knowledge worker healthcare professionals across the healthcare continuum; and the use of technology to support imaginative healthcare programs.

Integrative experiences provide opportunities to interact with nursing and other healthcare leaders from a variety of settings and with diverse foci of expertise. These experiences are incorporated into the major courses and into the practicum experience that completes the program.

The program is designed as a mostly web-based program to allow busy nurses to complete their graduate studies from anywhere in the world; occasional on-campus or gatherings via technology such as Net Meetings may be incorporated into key courses. The program totals 39 credit hours and can be completed in one year of full-time or two years of part-time study.

This program has a broad nursing and healthcare leadership focus, and assumes that students will have pre-requisite understanding of some management functions, including basic performance evaluation, budget monitoring, and staff deployment/scheduling. Students who do not have this knowledge will be expected to gain it prior to admission or early in the program. Program advisors can provide information on possible avenues for students to gain or review this foundational information.
