GNRS 5355 Pathophysiology
This course is designed to provide the post baccalaureate nurse with the opportunity to build upon an undergraduate physiology and pathophysiology science background and clinical experience in the examination of pathophysiological mechanisms inherent in the manifestation of selected processes. The course takes a systems approach to the study of pathophysiology and examines selected dysfunctions of the pediatric, maternal, and adult patient.

GNRS 5301 Pharmacological Principles of Clinical Therapeutics
This course focuses on the analysis of advanced pharmacological and pharmacokinetic principles and the application of these principles to selected drug categories. Emphasis is on those drugs most commonly used in advanced obstetric/gynecological, neonatal, pediatric, adult and gerontologic nursing practice. Analysis of selected health problems is integrated with the development of scientifically based clinical pharmacological management of these problems.

GNRS 5400 Advanced Health Assessment
Building upon prerequisite knowledge of health assessment, this course presents the theoretical and clinical basis for advanced assessment in specialty nursing practice. Emphasis is placed on comprehensive physical, psychosocial, and cultural assessment as a foundation for advanced practice nursing in the student's specialty area. Faculty facilitate the classroom and laboratory experiences which focus on assessment of patients, presentation of findings, and clinical decision-making for a variety of age groups.

*Post Masters students who have these courses on their graduate transcripts may receive credit for them if they have been taken within the past 5 years and are judged to be equivalent to the above courses. Individuals with questions are urged to contact the major program director.

GNRS 5114 -or- GNRS 5308
GNRS 5114 Nurse Practitioner: Dimensions of Professional Role
Role theory serves as the basis for the study of tech development and evaluation of the role of the nurse practitioner. Selected issues such as the scope of practice and political, economic, and legislative influences are analyzed. The historical development and acceptance of the nurse practitioner role are traced through nursing practice acts, requirements imposed by boards of nurse examiners, national certification efforts, third party payment systems, and various professional organizations. Prerequisites: Graduate standing, consent of instructor, and successful completion of first clinical course within NP specialty.

GNRS 5308 Professional Practices, Issues, and Responsibilities
This course presents the business, cultural, economic, ethical, political, legal, and social responsibilities that will challenge the nurse-midwife in private or public practice. Assessment of the community and its resources in preparation for implementation of midwifery practice or evaluation of existing midwifery practice is included. Building on the professional issues presented through the curriculum, emphasis is placed on regulations imposed by state boards, state and national laws, professional organizations, health care agencies in nurse-midwifery practice, and the role of tech American College of Nurse-Midwives Prerequisite. Graduate standing and consent of instructor.

Experience Requirements by Program/Track

    • FNP - A minimum of one year of recent experience as a registered nurse is preferred.
    • GNP - A minimum of one year of recent experience as a registered nurse is preferred.
    • ACNP - A minimum of two years of recent experience as a registered nurse in an acute care facility is required.
    • PNP - A minimum of one year of recent pediatric experience as a registered nurse is required.
    • NNP - A minimum of two years of recent experience as a registered nurse in a Level III nursery is required.
    • Nurse Educator - A minimum of one year of recent experience as a registered nurse is required; acute care experience preferred.
    • Nursing Leadership - A minimum of one year of recent management/leadership experience as a registered nurse is required.
