MASTER's Program

The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston School of Nursing is uniquely suited to provide an excellent learning environment for graduate nursing students. The school is not only the oldest nursing school in the Southwest but also boasts the oldest M.S.N. program in Texas. For more than 100 years, the school, its faculty and students have played an important role at UTMB, which serves as the only state-funded multi-categorical health referral center in Texas. This proud heritage plus a dynamic group of faculty and students places us at the forefront of both nursing practice and research.

The School of Nursing offers diverse specialty areas: primary care nurse practitioner, adult acute care nurse practitioner, neonatal nurse practitioner or nursing leadership. Further specialization as a primary care nurse practitioner is also possible and includes majors in family health, geriatric, and pediatric nursing. Each of these majors contains a substantial community health component. All majors in the master’s program specialties are available to master’s or doctorally prepared nurses as a post-master’s certificate program. Two new programs, Nursing Leadership in Complex Health Care Organizations and Nursing Education, are internet based.

The Master's Program is the right choice for nurses striving for excellence in clinical practice, education, and research because of the diversity and flexibility of our program combined with excellent clinical resources and a highly experienced faculty. Many of the core curriculum classes are Internet-based, such as the Pediatric, Geriatric, Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Programs, Nursing Education and Nursing Leadership. Required campus time will vary with each specialty focus, but students must attend Orientation.

Registered Nurses with Associates Degrees may apply to the RN-MSN program. This admission option facilitates career development for highly motivated and high achieving individuals.
